The Kalamazoo Township Board of Trustees came together to discuss a request to approve a funding solution to community policing, on June 13, 2022.

All public comments at this meeting were related to community policing. From police officers to concerned community members and community leaders, spoken in support of community policing.

“I just wanted to talk a little bit about community policing…I realized that having a peripheral type relationship with the community can only birth assumptions about people. But once you move into proximity with people, then the biases and stereotypes can be torn down,” said James Harris, pastor of Trenches Community Church. “So I just think getting the police back into the community, and involved in the community, leaning in the community would produce an even better result.”

The board approved the request swiftly with much agreement.

Trustee Ashley Glass, requested the removal of item 9A, the new business request to approve the Parchment Police Service Contract renewal.

“I request a motion for the board to go into a closed session related to personnel issues,” said Glass.

Attorney Roxanne Seeber responded that Trustee Glass needs to give proper notice. The board began the discussion on proper notice and how to get a closed session.

After all items were discussed and approved, the meeting adjourned.
