Learn about the community through arts immersion

Neighborhood Journalist Mary Reed interviews Eric Oliphant, Operations and Membership Manager of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, for her show: Level UP!

Level UP is a series about great people who are doing great things in our community.

Kalamazoo, Mich had an annual growth rate of .6 percent from 2016-2018, as more families made their homes in Kalamazoo. Eric Oliphant, Operations and Membership Manager of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo (ACGK) was one of those families.

Eric has served for nearly a decade as a percussion educator and performer. He and his young family have embraced Kalamazoo and brought a variety of talents to the city.

Eric literally glows while he talks about art, and his easy smile reflects the joy he finds in his work. His co-workers have deep roots in the area arts scene. And they act in unity to meet the diverse needs of artists, and create a community surrounding the arts.

The staff presents a live radio show called Creative Café each week. They reach out to a broad community of business owners and artisans through a monthly meet n’ greet called Art Hop. They also encourage everyone to attend monthly Happy Hours that help people become aware of the spectrum of art offerings and opportunities in the community.

Art immersion is one way to achieve connectivity and balance.  Eric invites newcomers and others to explore Kalamazoo through engagement in the arts.
