Kalamazoo Youth for Christ announces new youth center in the Eastside
The youth center will offer teens a wide variety of resources and opportunities like: mentoring, financial literacy training, tutoring, art classes, music lessons, job training, dance classes, cooking classes and bible study.
Kalamazoo Youth for Christ has announced a variety of youth-centered services available at their new City Life Teen Center in the Eastside of Kalamazoo. Though currently still under construction, the youth center will offer classes, recreational activities and leadership opportunities when it opens in January.
Scott McCloughan, executive director of Kalamazoo Youth for Christ, says his organization has wanted to put a recreation center in Kalamazoo for almost 15 years. The eastside of Kalamazoo was ultimately chosen for the location because the community saw a need for it.
“The northside has some really good resources, the southside has some organizations that have some facilities like this, but there has not been a teen rec center in the eastside for a few decades,” McCloughan said.
The youth center is located strategically in an area where city leaders have identified a need. Deputy City Manager Patsy Moore compared the Eastside Neighborhood to a jewel, that only requires little investment in order to see its value.
“At first glance, we see families, friends and neighbors, working so very hard just to do life.” Moore said. “As we have become acquainted with the neighborhood, we see the hopes, the dreams, the fears, and the anxieties of this community.”
The youth center will offer teens a wide variety of resources and opportunities like: mentoring, financial literacy training, tutoring, art classes, music lessons, job training, dance classes, cooking classes and bible study. Once complete, the youth center will also include a dining hall, a computer lab, a nursery, and a dance/aerobics studio.
Construction for the center began in February. The project is currently scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
