Dreams Can Come True In Kalamazoo

Sergeant Fidel Mireles has been living his dream as a Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer (KPS) for the past sixteen years.

Sergeant Fidel Mireles has been living his dream as a Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer (KPS) for the past sixteen years.

When he was a child, his family endured many stereotypes and harsh behaviors aimed at them being a migrant family living in a southern border town. From early as he can remember, Fidel wanted to be a police officer. His family was extremely opposed to anyone they loved following that path.

Eventually, his family moved to Kalamazoo. Fidel attended Western Michigan University and found opportunities that allowed him to explore his dream.  One day, the savvy humanitarian asked his father if he trusted him. Without a doubt he did.  His father realized that they couldn't all be bad if Fidel became a police officer. With that, Fidel won the support of his family.

Sergeant Mireles is now the lead recruiter for KPS. He is focused on removing stereotypes that exist in the public about the police force.  He shared various ways you can be more involved and get to know the people who serve you daily.

Youths aged 14 and up can arrange with their school counselor to explore a day in the life of an officer.  Citizens who would like an overview of the various teams that comprise KPS can attend the annual citizens day. You are very likely to interact with Sergeant Mireles at any of the college fairs and community festivals.

If you are curious about committing to being on the force, you can attend an 11-week citizens academy.  There is no limit on when you can begin to follow your dreams 14, 40, any gender or community is welcome to explore.  A good place to start is visiting the KPS website: https://kalamazoopublicsafety.org/

You might see this dedicated Sergeant anywhere. Immediately after our PMN vidcast, I saw him, some EMTs, some Fire department trucks, and uniformed officers responding to a fire call in downtown Kalamazoo. His youth- ride -along from Mattawan, was safely on the sidelines near one of the fire trucks. Fidel encourages you to follow your dreams and reap the rewards that come from loving what you do.
