In early August more than 400 of the best junior tennis players in the United States will meet in Kalamazoo for the 74th year to compete in the United States Tennis Association’s Boys’ 18 and 16 National Championships. The USTA “Nats at the Zoo” as it is affectionately known, will run from Friday, August 5 to Sunday, August 14, and PMN will be “LIVE” for all of the action!
For over 25 years, PMN has provided “live” media coverage of this unique and very special event. The production plan has evolved over the years, and now features 8-camera coverage of the three main courts at Kalamazoo College’s Stowe Stadium. The main production control center is now located on the top floor of the Stowe Stadium tower, giving PMN an excellent vantage point for following the action as well as protecting our equipment (and crew!).
Two years ago, PMN partnered with Kalamazoo College and Secant Technologies to expand the distribution of our coverage beyond our local cable television channels. The PMN coverage of featured matches at Stowe Stadium has been streamed on the USTA Boys’ Championship website and has proven very popular with tennis coaches, parents, and families around the country. This year, again in partnership with Kalamazoo College and Secant, we will expand the streamed coverage to include continual static camera coverage of all three of the Stowe Stadium center courts, plus a fourth stream of PMN’s full multi-camera and commentator coverage!
PMN’s coverage of the USTA Boys 18 and 16 National Championships is special for several reasons: (1) no other community media center in the country even attempts a production of this scale and length; (2) the complexity and duration of the event allows PMN’s college interns and high school production assistants to gain experience in “live” sports coverage; and (3) PMN’s media support is a demonstration of cooperation and community involvement that is critical to keeping this event in Kalamazoo, hopefully for many years to come.
It’s no secret the two weeks in setup and production for the “Nats” is my favorite time of year. There is something uplifting about how a community media center like PMN uses its unique resources to promote and support an iconic sports and cultural event in the heart of our community. PMN’s coverage of the USTA Boys 18 & 16 National Championships is a perfect example of “building community through media” and we hope you enjoy the experience!
