Public Media Network’s weekly workshop series that takes a look at the pressing issues in our community and the media environment and information needs around those issues. The workshops also provide you with hands-on skills to deconstruct media, and create media to shift our local narratives.

Events start at 6 pm at Public Media Network located on the 3rd floor of the Epic Center in Downtown Kalamazoo (359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, Ste 300).  Parking is available in the Epic Center Ramp.  We can validate your parking if you bring your parking ticket with you.

October 24 – Screening “The Great Hack”
Join us during Media Literacy week for a screening and discussion of the “The Great Hack”. Data has surpassed oil as the world’s most valuable asset. It’s being weaponized to wage cultural and political warfare. People everywhere are in a battle for control of our most intimate personal details. THE GREAT HACK uncovers the dark world of data exploitation with astounding access to the personal journeys of key players on different sides of the explosive Cambridge Analytica/Facebook data scandal. THE GREAT HACK forces us to question the origin of the information we consume daily. What do we give up when we tap that phone or keyboard and share ourselves in the digital age?

November 7th – Easy tools to document the community
Explore how you can use easy tools like the Mevo to help document events and meetings in the community and make them more accessible.

November 14th – Covering live events
Join us to explore what it takes to produce live coverage of local events. We’ll take a look at the planning for the Kalamazoo Holiday parade and help you get involved in the production.

November 21st – Behind the Scenes
Take a behind the scenes look at media production for the production of an episode of “Spotlight in the Zoo”. You can even try your hand at running a camera for the production. Spotlight in the Zoo focuses on highlighting local organizations and the work they do in the community.

December 5th – Capturing those holiday moments
Come and learn some practical tips for how to capture those memories and special moments this holiday season. Bring your own mobile device if you have one.

December 12th – Narratives of Poverty & Homelessness
Join in on an open discussion of the current narratives around Poverty and Homelessness. What information is missing, what stories are not being told, and what are the local information needs around this issue. Help generate ideas on how to improve the narrative around poverty and homelessness to drive our community towards solutions.

December 19th – Behind the Scenes
