A video collage of Kalamazoo Symphony concerts, super heroes who fight crime…in the Epic Center, and a tribute to a fallen fire chief were among the films produced at Public Media Network recognized for regional media awards. Works by PMN volunteers, local filmmakers, students, and staff were honored with 2018 Philo Awards by the Alliance of Community Media.
Judges recognize the works of those associated with public media in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan in a variety of categories. Official awards will be presented during the Philo Awards event on October 27th in Alliance, OH.
Alliance for Community Media (ACM), was formed in the heart of the Central States Region – Centerville, OH. This region has consistently served the organization and provides leadership and programmatic support to community media in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio.
The Central States Region conducts the Philo T. Farnsworth Video Festival (winners recognized at the Fall regional conference) and the Roxie L. Cole Leadership Award (winner recognized at the Spring regional conference).
The awards and annual festival is named for Philo T. Farnsworth, the father of modern television. Philo was born August 19, 1906 on a farm near Beaver City, Utah. As a youth in 1922, Philo first revealed his scientific ideas for an all-electric television system. He later established an electronics laboratory in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he succeeded in turning his dreams into reality by inventing the first receiving tube for television transmissions.
ACM Central States Region honors the memory of Philo T. Farnsworth by recognizing the efforts of modern day pioneers who work to further develop the use of this technology and promote the use of media in our communities. The “PHILO” is awarded as recognition of excellence in media creation.
