The Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home instituted the KEYS (Kalamazoo Empowering Youth for Success) music therapy program one year ago. The program involves writing lyrics, recording songs, and reflecting as a group on the reality and meaning behind their work.
The KEYS program as a whole is about growing skills in communication, self control, and teamwork so that the kids can build a better future for themselves. The goal is to make the treatment about a successful transition into the community as opposed to just a time of detention.
